Our Story
Honoring the Past, Building the Future
The Little Bear School House was originally built in 1912 as a one-room schoolhouse serving the children of Gallatin Gateway. For decades, it stood as a beacon of education and community, shaping the lives of countless students until its closure in the mid-20th century. Rather than allowing this piece of history to fade, local families and community members came together to preserve the building and its legacy. Through dedication, fundraising, and volunteer efforts, the schoolhouse was restored and reopened as a museum in 1998. Since then, it has grown into a vibrant hub for education, cultural preservation, and family engagement. Our journey reflects the resilience and spirit of our community, and today we continue to honor that legacy by offering programs that connect children and families to both history and one another. The impact of our work can be seen in the joy of children discovering old school desks, the pride of parents watching their children learn, and the sense of unity that comes from celebrating our shared heritage
ABOUT US
Celebrating History, Nurturing Young Minds
Little Bear School House Museum and Historical Society is more than a museum—it is a living classroom where children and families can experience the richness of Montana’s past while engaging in meaningful educational opportunities. Our philosophy is rooted in the belief that children learn best when they are immersed in environments that combine exploration, storytelling, and hands-on activities. We emphasize safety, trust, and inclusivity, ensuring that every child feels valued and supported. What makes us unique is our ability to bridge the gap between history and early education. By preserving artifacts and stories from our community’s past, we provide children with a foundation of cultural awareness while also nurturing their social, emotional, and intellectual growth. Families who join us find not only a place of learning but also a welcoming community dedicated to raising thoughtful, confident, and compassionate young learners.

What We Do
Learning Through History and Play
At Little Bear School House Museum and Historical Society, we offer a unique blend of educational programs, interactive exhibits, and family-centered activities. Our daily programs are designed to engage children in hands-on learning experiences that combine history, creativity, and play. Children might explore authentic artifacts, participate in storytelling sessions, or engage in art and craft projects inspired by Montana’s past. We believe that learning should be joyful and meaningful, so our approach emphasizes curiosity, exploration, and collaboration. Our educators and volunteers guide children through activities that not only teach academic skills but also foster social and emotional development. By integrating history into early education, we help children build a strong sense of identity and belonging while preparing them for future learning. Families who participate in our programs find that their children gain not only knowledge but also confidence, empathy, and a deeper appreciation for the world around them.
OUR MISSION

Vision
Inspiring Generations Through Heritage
Our vision is to create a space where history and education come together to inspire future generations. We believe that by preserving the past, we can empower children to build a brighter future. Our vision extends beyond the walls of the museum, reaching into homes, schools, and communities as we foster a culture of learning, respect, and curiosity. We see ourselves as stewards of both history and childhood, ensuring that every child who walks through our doors leaves with a sense of wonder and possibility.

Values
Safety, Trust, and Community
Our values guide everything we do. We prioritize safety in every aspect of our programs, from the physical environment to the emotional well-being of each child. Trust is at the heart of our relationships with families, and we work hard to create an atmosphere where parents feel confident leaving their children in our care. Community is the foundation of our work, and we actively seek to build partnerships that strengthen the bonds between families, educators, and neighbors. These values ensure that our programs are not only educational but also deeply meaningful for everyone involved.

Impact
Building Connections That Last
The impact of our work can be seen in the lives of the children and families we serve. By combining history with early education, we create experiences that leave lasting impressions. Children develop a love of learning, parents find support and connection, and the community as a whole benefits from a stronger sense of shared heritage. Our workshops, events, and collaborative initiatives bring people together across generations, fostering pride in our local history while also preparing children for the future. The impact of our work is not just measured in numbers but in the smiles, stories, and memories that families carry with them long after their visit.

Our Work
Education & Learning
We provide children with opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences that connect history to modern life. Our programs emphasize literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills while also fostering creativity and critical thinking. By blending traditional education with historical exploration, we create a learning environment that is both rigorous and joyful.

Play & Exploration
We believe that play is essential to learning. Our programs encourage children to explore their environment, ask questions, and experiment with new ideas. Whether through imaginative play, outdoor activities, or creative arts, children are given the freedom to discover their interests and develop their unique talents. Play is not just fun—it is a vital part of growth and development.
Social & Emotional Development
We place a strong emphasis on helping children build social and emotional skills. Through group activities, storytelling, and collaborative projects, children learn empathy, cooperation, and resilience. Our nurturing environment ensures that every child feels supported as they navigate the challenges of growing up. These skills are essential for success in school and in life.

Programs/Services
Our programs are designed to serve children from preschool through elementary age, with activities tailored to meet the developmental needs of each group. Our curriculum combines academic learning with creative exploration, ensuring that children are prepared for future educational success while also enjoying the process of discovery. Special activities include seasonal workshops, family events, and cultural celebrations that bring history to life in engaging ways. We also offer parent-child programs that strengthen family bonds and provide opportunities for shared learning.
Community & Engagement
We believe that families are our most important partners. Parents are encouraged to participate in programs, volunteer at events, and share their own stories and traditions. Our community partnerships with local schools, libraries, and cultural organizations allow us to expand our reach and provide even more opportunities for children and families. Events such as heritage festivals, storytelling nights, and family workshops create spaces where the entire community can come together to celebrate, learn, and grow.
